Cyber Crime Police Arrest Man for Impersonating Officer and Extorting ₹1 Crore

In a significant breakthrough, the Cyber Crime Police Station has arrested Rahul Mishra, a 26-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, for his involvement in a cyber crime case that included impersonating a police officer and extorting ₹1 crore from a victim. The case, registered as No. 57/2024 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, stems from incidents that occurred between December 26 and December 28, 2024.

According to SDPO Bicholim Jivba Dalvi, the complainant received a message from a WhatsApp number impersonating a Delhi Crime Branch inspector. The impersonator falsely claimed that a police complaint had been registered against her and sent forged letters purportedly from the Supreme Court of India. Under duress, the victim was coerced into transferring money in multiple transactions across three different bank accounts.

Following an extensive investigation involving technical and financial analysis, police traced Mishra, who was operating mule accounts for money transfers. A team led by PSI Navin Naik successfully apprehended him in Uttar Pradesh. During interrogation, details of two additional bank accounts linked to seven other cyber fraud cases were uncovered, with total fraud amounts exceeding ₹2.58 crore across various states.

Mishra is currently in police custody, and further investigations are ongoing under the supervision of PI Deepak Pednekar. The Cyber Crime Police Station had previously arrested four individuals related to this case, bringing the total number of arrests to five.

Authorities recovered two mobile phones, one laptop, one tablet, and two hard disks during the arrest. This case highlights the increasing prevalence of cyber crimes in India and underscores the importance of vigilance among citizens regarding online communications.
