Vantara Issues Statement on Madhuri’s Care, Proposes Rehab Centre in Kalahapur

Vantara, the animal welfare initiative under Reliance, has issued an official statement addressing the care and future of Madhuri, the elephant currently at the centre of a legal and public debate in Kolhapur. Acknowledging the animal’s deep religious and cultural significance to the local community, Vantara reaffirmed its commitment to lawful, responsible animal care and clarified that its actions are based strictly on the binding directions issued by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court and the Kolhapur District Court.

The organization stated that its role was to ensure Madhuri’s welfare through legal means, and that it has neither initiated nor recommended her relocation. “We respect the sentiments of the devotees, the leadership of the Jain Matha, and the wider community who have expressed their emotions and attachment to Madhuri,” the statement read.

Vantara has expressed willingness to support the state and central governments in developing a permanent rehabilitation centre for Madhuri in Kolhapur’s Nandavan area. This proposed facility will offer:

  • A specialised hydrotherapy pond

  • Natural water body for swimming

  • Open-air shelter for rest and comfort

  • Barrier-free movement without chains

  • A soft sand resting surface

  • 24/7 medical care

  • Foot-soaking platforms

  • Pain relief support for arthritis

  • Behavioural enrichment

The plan also includes collaboration with the Maharashtra State Government, Kolhapur District authorities, and wildlife experts, aligning with international best practices for elephant care.

Vantara clarified that the land for the proposed facility will be identified only in consultation with the Jain Math and the people of Kolhapur, and all actions will be undertaken strictly as per court directives.

The organization acknowledged the emotional response from the public and apologized for any distress caused. “If our involvement, despite being court-directed, has caused any distress to the local community… we seek your forgiveness,” the statement said.

Emphasising that the initiative upholds the highest standards of animal welfare, Vantara called for unity in ensuring the long-term care and dignity of Madhuri, concluding: “Let us move forward not in opposition but in unity, with love for Madhuri at the heart of it all.”
