The Election Commission of India is conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Some people are asking why. Here’s the simple answer.
– The ECI’s SIR is fully within the law, Article 324 + Section 21(3) of the RP Act, 1950, which allows special revision for “any constituency.” Reasons are recorded, so it’s open to court review, and the Supreme Court has upheld it.
– Why now? The rolls drifted for 20+ years: urbanisation, migration, unreported deaths, new young voters, illegal immigrants.
The result: no duplicate or dead entries, only genuine voters, “one person, one vote.” A cleaner roll ensuring a stronger democracy. These are exactly the reasons an intensive revision becomes necessary, not optional.
A clean voter list means your vote counts for what it truly should. This is a constitutional process, backed by law and upheld by the Supreme Court, that strengthens the democracy the world admires.
