In a shocking development, local authorities have detained several individuals linked to the controversial “Popular Front of India” (PFI) organization, raising alarms over potential threats to peace during the ongoing Exposition of Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier in Goa. The police have identified four members from Dovorlim and Cuncolim: Yasin Nalur, Mohammed Haveri, Imran Illyas, and Shaikh Rauf. Following intelligence reports suggesting that these individuals may engage in activities aimed at disturbing the tranquility of the region, they were swiftly interrogated and subsequently presented before a magistrate in Margao.

Adding to the tension, Altaf Sandi from Curti, Ponda, associated with the Goa Youth Foundation, was also questioned under similar circumstances. Authorities are taking no chances as they implement Chapter Proceedings to ensure these individuals are held accountable for their behavior moving forward.

This crackdown highlights the heightened vigilance of law enforcement in safeguarding Goa’s communal harmony during significant religious events. With fears of unrest looming, the police are committed to maintaining peace and order in the face of rising concerns about extremist activities. As Goa prepares for a series of religious festivities, the community watches closely, aware that safety remains paramount at all times.

The fourth edition of Exercise Sea Vigil, India’s largest coastal defence drill, concluded successfully on November 19, 2024. Spanning eight days, this pan-India initiative aimed to enhance maritime security and readiness against potential coastal threats. Organised by the Indian Navy in collaboration with six ministries and 21 organisations, including the Coast Guard, Intelligence Bureau, and State Authorities, the exercise involved extensive participation.

Conducted in two phases, Phase-1 focused on auditing coastal infrastructure and evaluating security readiness, while Phase-2 simulated real-life threat scenarios with the deployment of ships, aircraft, and boats. The exercise also engaged coastal communities, including fishing groups and NCC students, to raise awareness about maritime security.

Sea Vigil 24 provided a comprehensive assessment of India’s coastal defences, highlighting strengths and identifying areas for improvement. It also reinforced inter-agency coordination and communication, ensuring a unified approach to maritime safety.

Serving as a precursor to the biennial Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX), Sea Vigil underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its 7,500-kilometre coastline. The drill reaffirmed the nation’s preparedness to counter challenges and safeguard vital assets, including Ports, Oil Rigs, and Cable Landing Points, ensuring maritime security for the future.
